Originally developed in the early 1880’s, Rockland consisted of mansions and estates surrounded by stone walls and fences. During this time, the architect Samuel MacLure designed numerous Arts and Crafts-style homes, many of which still grace the neighbourhood. Today, Rockland remains largely residential with some commercial areas along the northern boundary.
The neighbourhood has evolved as many mansions have been converted to suites and it now includes a mix of apartments, townhouses, single-family homes and care facilities. Despite this change, the neighbourhood has retained its elegance and character.
Parks
Rockland has only one small neighbourhood park, however the landscape throughout the neighbourhood is beautiful and well-tended. Some of the institutions in the neighbourhood function to some degree like parks, such as Craigdarroch Castle and Government House. There is a little space at the North junction of Joan Crescent and Craigdarroch Road that is the Rockland Woodland Garden, a special project for the neighbourhood of the Rockland Neighbourhood Association.
